So do not be surprised when you see these selvage jeans turn into marvels you could only dream of. Keen on knowing more about the selvage denim used for these jeans, and why is only half-selvage? You got it: The denim is woven by Europe’s selvage powerhouse Candiani. It has a deep, pure indigo, blue hue, and a rustic ring-spun character. At 15 oz the denim is extra durable, but quite heavy, especially for kids’ jeans. To counteract the stiffness of the heavy denim we have rinsed off the starch, making the jeans comfier from the get-go. The half-selvage might sound different, but it is quite nifty. Since kids’ jeans are tiny placing all leg pattern pieces along the selvage results in unused fabric in the middle. Utilizing the selvage for only half of the leg pattern pieces maximizing fabric efficiency. We’ve come across a fair share of vintage jeans designed this way, so back in the day it was not all that uncommon. It was likely used for the same reason we do, but it may also have been used to add shape to the leg.
